Volunteers Needed: You Can't Improve What You Don't Measure!

By Merritt Frey, Executive Director

How do you measure a great education? You tell us! In 2021, Mali Rising is overhauling our approach to measuring the quality of education in our remote, rural Mali schools. We are searching for 2 to 3 people with skills in education, monitoring, and evaluation to help us really understand how to change lives through education.

Advisors will engage with our board committee (Internal Affairs Committee) on this issue and devote 4 to 6 hours a month to research and discussion. We ask Advisors to commit to 10 months of engagement (March-December) if possible. In exchange, Advisors will get to know a wonderful group of volunteers, explore how education works in a different culture, and have access to special content from Mali and our schools.

Understanding Our Teachers' Strengths & Weaknesses

Here at Mali Rising we really believe that good teachers make a good school. That’s why we have a special Teachers Project devoted directly to providing the support and training our teachers need to deliver great education in the classroom. As part of this work, we host an annual 5-day training for about 40 of our teachers. We’ve just finished the pre-training evaluation of our teachers, and are now getting ready for the 2019 training!

0 to 98%: The Mystery of the DEF Scores Continues

Looking at this year's DEF results we see something we've seen in previous years -- an incredibly wide variation in pass rates among our schools. Two schools did incredibly well with 98% of their students passing; two schools did incredibly poorly with 0% of their students passing. Nine of our 19 middle schools beat the average national pass rate this year (70%), while 10 did not.  Why this incredible variation in results?
