Denik Delivers Books for the Kids of Zambougou

I love many things about my job, but I have to admit that pretty much nothing makes me happier than the days we deliver textbooks to the hands of our students in Mali. Thanks to the generous folks at Denik, last week we did just that — handing more than 400 textbooks to the students of Denik Middle School in Zambougou.

A textbook might seem like a small thing to those of us in the United States or Europe, but in Mali classrooms a textbook is a gem. Many schools in Mali have no textbooks at all. Zero. Textbooks = A Dancing, Singing, Village-Wide Celebration

Wow. I get excited about a new book, but the village of Beneko REALLY gets excited. Book Review: The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu

Since joining Mali Rising's staff, I've tried to read as many books written by Malians and/or about Mali as I can. Frankly, one doesn't find scads of them here in the U.S.  But I'd been hearing about The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu for a while, and was excited to see a pretty main-stream book that was set in Mali getting some attention.
